God's Hands

“I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish … May Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of My hands!”

(John 10:28-29 NIV)

Have you ever seen the hands of some people? Some have little hands; some medium sized hands; some have huge hands. I remember one day our daughter Shalane (age nine or ten) and I were at the piano together. She could only stretch her fingers over a few notes. However, from my thumb to my little finger I could stretch and play notes simultaneously that were over an octave in length. She exclaimed how big my hands were to be able to do that in comparison to hers.

Our Heavenly Father has really, really big hands. Our universe is so big that we can’t even fathom it. The Apostle Paul writes in Hebrews that “The heavens are the work of Your hands!” (Hebrews 1:10). Also, the Psalmist confessed that, “The Lord upholds me with His hands!” (Psalm 37:24). Let our hearts and minds rejoice in the greatness of our God. Here are a few thoughts to ponder in this regard:

1. God’s hands are big enough to bless you – Jesus often touched people and lay His hands upon them to bless them. Remember the children in Mark 10:16 came to Him and He, “Put His hands on them and blessed them.” He does the same for us. Note the words of Isaiah, “The Lord will hold you in His hand for all to see – a splendid crown in the hand of God!” (Isaiah 62:3). Just before His ascension and leaving His disciples, Luke records that, “He lifted up His hands and blessed them!”

2. God’s hands are scarred to never forget you – In heaven, the only scars will be on Jesus. Do you think God can ever forget you? He has a constant reminder in His nail-scarred hands. The scripture records for us this wonderful narrative, “Can a mother forget the baby at her breast and have no compassion for the child she has borne? Though she may forget I will not forget you! See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands.” Isaiah 49:15-16)

3. God’s hands are powerful enough to heal you – Mark 8:22-25 records for us the story of the blind man who was brought to Jesus and says, “..He put His hands on Him!”. In this instance Jesus laid His hands on the man’s eyes and at the end of this story the man saw everything clearly. He laid hands on many in the New Testament and people were healed instantly. God has healing hands.

4. God’s hands are strong enough to keep you – He is able to hold on to us eternally. We are reminded of the words of the Apostle John who wrote down that powerful statement of Jesus on the occasion of the Lord talking about His deity and His sheep (that’s us), “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish. May Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of My Father’s hands!” (John 10:28-29). Wow!! How awesome is that??

These are just a few. Search the scriptures for yourself by doing a study on the ‘hand’ or ‘hands’ of God. You’ll find it a great blessing and inspiring. Also, don’t forget the words of that old American spiritual…

He’s got the whole world in His hands, He’s got the whole world in His hands

He’s got the whole world in His hands, He’s got the whole world in His hands

He’s got you and me, brother, in His hands, He’s got you and me, sister, in His hands

He’s got everybody here in His hands, He’s got the whole world in His hands

Mmmmmmm……….think about it!!!
